Overview of the Private Investigation Industry

Introduction

This course will provide individuals who are new to private investigation with the knowledge necessary to understand and identify what private investigators are and what private investigators do. This is an introductory course designed to provide an overview of the private investigation industry.

At Course Completion
At the completion of the course, students will be able to:

• Define what a private investigator is.
• Identify what a private investigator is not.
• Describe the history of private investigation services.
• Describe the role of a private investigator.
• Identify private investigator licensing requirements.
• Define ethics appropriate to the private investigation industry.
• Describe common types of private investigative services.
• Differentiate between the various types of investigative work.

Prerequisites
• None
The course materials, lectures, and lab exercises are in English. To benefit fully from the instruction, students need to possess a strong understanding of the English language.

• Describe the role of planning an investigation.
• Create an “Investigative Case File”.
• Define differences between first and second-hand knowledge.
